Cleaning a diamond ring with soap bubbles in warm water

Keep Your Diamonds Brilliant for Life

Here’s a secret jewelers know: most “dull” diamonds aren’t damaged — they’re just dirty. A thin film of lotion, soap and skin oil builds up on the stone and quietly blocks the light. The good news? Bringing back the sparkle takes about two minutes.

The two-minute weekly clean

You don’t need special products. Just this:

  • Fill a small bowl with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap.
  • Let your piece soak for 15–20 minutes to loosen buildup.
  • Gently brush the stone — front and especially behind it — with a soft toothbrush.
  • Rinse under clean water (cover the drain!) and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.

Do this weekly and your diamonds will look freshly bought, all the time.

What to avoid

  • Harsh chemicals. Chlorine and bleach can damage the metal of a setting. Take rings off before cleaning the house or swimming in a pool.
  • Lotions and perfume. Apply them first, let them dry, then put your jewelry on — not the other way around.
  • Rough activities. Diamonds are hard, but a sharp knock can chip one or bend a prong. Slip rings off at the gym or before heavy lifting.
  • Abrasive cleaners. No toothpaste, no scouring powder — they can scratch precious metal.

Store them kindly

A diamond is the hardest natural material there is, which means it can scratch your other jewelry — and other diamonds. Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or a lined box so nothing rubs together.

Once a year: Have a jeweler check the prongs and settings and give everything a professional deep clean. It’s the cheapest insurance against ever losing a stone.

Treat them well and good diamonds don’t fade with time — they stay exactly as brilliant as the day you first put them on.
